When I read a bit of this book a few months ago, I found the betrayal of Max's parents interesting and thought that landing the job of helping expand the Panama Canal unique. However, I agree with what you said (from what I read) - the book didn't really have any impact on me either. I think I read until I hit that "slow pace" wall and this is when I stopped, which seems like a good choice. I don't like reads that slows to a crawl, then speeds up in the end to conclude almost too quickly. I'm glad that there was good editing here, but I think I will pass on this one. I have experienced this ambivalency myself where I will read a book, and enjoy it while reading it, but it will not be too memorable. I would rate it high immediately after reading it perhaps, and after a week will have more of a 'meh' reaction.

I read a short excerpt at the beginning- it had two prologues. That made me paused and ask myself, why do you need two prologues? I found it odd. The excerpt was interesting and I had no issues with the writing, but this is the kind of book I don't want to read. Your clear review made me realize it was not for me, so thank you.

Great book to get and read! I read this a couple of times way back and I must tell you that I really enjoyed the hidden layers of economical political struggle and the intrigue that is dragged to the surface of this book. It really came out as a pleasant surprise to me really!

I was interested in reading this book but after reading the review, I'm not so sure anymore. It sounds like it has a great intro only to dwindle down somewhere in the middle. Kudos for reading it twice, though! I doubt if I'd have had the patience for that. Thanks for sharing.

Recommending a book that does not create a impact in you is not a book that I am willing to recommend, this is my personal opinion. But this book has certain intresting insides to it that caught my attention. Looking forward to add in my book collection!
