I really loved the majority of this book. However, I feel that the romance between Lily and James was forced. I didn’t like James’ character or decisions regarding Lily’a future. However, Lily’s story is inspiring and well-written.

I always share my feelings on love and that it is one of the most powerful force in humans. James and Lilly had a strong chemistry between them but conditions made them to take a slow approach. I like James personality and the way he handled his feelings for Lilly. I like the setting too

I really enjoyed the book because I have a particular penchant for historical romance books. Also, the cliffhanger at the end let me know that more is coming!
I loved the strong and passionate character of Lily. James was...okay.
I also loved the style of prose. It was beautifully woven and just enraptured me.
I would definitely recommend this book to others!

The book was well written, I did find the characters quite interesting. The language use is captivating and quite emotional. I did love the protagonist. I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't like anything I have read before. I didn't expect romance to be infused with slavery. I enjoyed every bit. I would gladly recommend it to people who are into drama, romace, and who love their novels with suspense. This is a four of four star book.

For me this book was really interesting and enjoyable to read. The author's narrative is such that the whole work is easy to read. I liked the slave codes that help the reader better understand the history. I admire the father-daughter relationship between William and Lily, and in general, William's character is positive because it helps fulfill Lily's dreams. There is nothing in this book that I do not like.

I enjoy the book but I feel James was too overprotective of Lily which in turn makes Lily uncomfortable in the relationship. Nevertheless, it is an interesting book and I rate it 4 out of 4 stars

I do not expect love story to be found in a slavery book concept, that thrills me. I enjoyed every bit of the book and would recommend it to anyone who does not mind getting emotional reading a novel.

The book was an interesting read. The romance between Lily and James seemed kind of forced but asides from that I loved the book. I recommend it to readers who enjoy historical romance novels.

Historical romance rarely ever goes wrong. This is now the fusion of the affluent and the slave? I've been won over.

I would give this book a four-star rating for the love that existed between Lily and James. I love playing the piano and seeing Lily's love for the piano made the book more interesting. I love it because it is historical and romance fiction.

I think this book deserves a 4 star rating because of its writing style and the way the chemistry between Lily and James is portrayed. I really enjoyed it and I think you'll too if you are even a little bit in the historical romance genre.

I enjoyed reading the book. The writer's use of third person pronoun still let us know the characters' thoughts and feelings. Hence, it was easier to relate to their persona. I found the book predictable. The writer in a bid to create suspense overdid herself and created an unreal version of James which is discovered later. Her research work is however top tier, with regards to slave rights and freedoms. This makes the book an enjoyable read to a person who has had no previous interaction with slave history.

I feel the book is very good and touching about the life of a slave. I like the human spirit and authenticity of the work. What I don't like are some of the sex scenes between James and Lily. Or in the imagination of characters. That's why I only rate it at 3/4. I think those paragraphs are not necessary.
