Great review. I want to read this book after reading this review. I can relate to Hiram when it comes to being lonely when searching for money and fame. Life is full of regrets, and each person goes through periods in their life when they question the choices they made in the past. I look forward to reading this book.

This is an interesting review and it resonates with my take on the sample. I, too, felt a variety of conflicting emotions sampling the first few pages but ended up with firm dislike for both Hiram and his wife as they seemed grossly mishandling the family relationships. Hiram's walking out of the family dinner to eat out felt to me grossly unacceptable, and even more so - leaving his hike teammates to die in the storm in the Himalayas. I also found it interesting to read in the review that this book has mystery and crime aspects - my personal take from the sampling was different, I thought it was a family-centered psychological novel.

"McDowell" by William H. Coles reflects on how redemption relieves one from guilty pressure for terrible things committed. I like that it tackles what most people struggle with in life. From the sample pages and review, I am salivating to read this novel. Thank you for your insightful review.

Hiram, like many others, acts upon his greed and chases money. No one can escape the consequences of that in the future. In the same way, Hiram is put in a spot. From your review, I feel things are not great within Hiram's family as well. But, as you mentioned, he was unorthodox with his children. I wonder what could have gone wrong? Facing new people can bring light into a dark tunnel and give a person a fresh perspective, and I hope Hiram found it too. Your review is excellent.

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting story following a man that has led a full life from his early life where he pursued money and power to his later life where he has to deal with the consequences of his early life. Well done.

The plot amazes me, especially while I am very interested in medicine. A doctor has a very long way to walk to get to greatness, and I'm intrigued by what imorralities did this surgeon have to do to gain such foes. I am very invested and would love to read this book.

McDowell sounds like a book with many great and questionable characters. The central character seems like someone who isn't able to see his mistakes which can happen if one is hungry for power. If I end reading this book, I'll have this amazing, well written and detailed review to thank for.

The book appears to be full of intrigue and mystery, and it also seems to have a thoughtful and deep tone. Overcoming past mistakes can be a difficult task, but meeting new people who are not aware of your history can often provide a fresh perspective and a chance to see things in a different light.

This sounds like the premise of a great tv show! ambition without morality is what plagues this world so it's such an important topic to talk about! Thanks for this review, it was extremely informative!

Based on the initial paragraphs of the book, I do not like McDowell even though he is the protagonist. He will step over anyone for power and survival. However, the author does have a fluid writing style which is easy to read. There may be better things to come in the story, but I'm put off by the character.

McDowell by William Coles is a fictional story about Hiram McDowell, a surgeon who ran a medical foundation in Nepal. I was intrigued after reading the OBC review and wondered what the horrible deed done by Hiram was that changed his and his family's life. The sample pages gave a perfect glimpse of Hiram's character, especially how he abandoned Woolf and grabbed his oxygen supply without remorse. Congratulations on the BOTD!
