Great review! You have covered everything very well in your review. The lines you have written at the beginning of the review are the essence of this book. Mathematician Shmuel Kantorovitz has presented everything in a simple and straightforward manner in his autobiography. This life story is inspiring, even if you are not interested in mathematics. Congratulations on being declared 'BOTD'!

"The Wandering Mathematician" by Shmuel Kantorovitz is an autobiography that focuses on the time before Kantorovitz was born, the immigration of his family from Jerusalem to France and then to Morocco. The story then shifts to years later when his study of mathematics began at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Kantorovitz was the son of Saba Yitzhak and he was born in 1935. He was named after his maternal grandfather and he had four siblings. The Jewish family spent most of their lives together in Morocco. His father was a teacher and his mother wanted to be a teacher but was only able to teach her children who also became very interested in school and education. The book consists of 220 pages with 31 chapters. While there are many names that may be hard to pronounce, it is a very interesting story and focuses on love of family and the importance of education. Readers that want to learn more about mathematics will need to read the author’s other books. Shmuel completed his PhD in Minnesota and then the wandering truly began between universities including Princeton, Yale, University of Illinois in Chicago and then back to Bar Ilan University in Israel. I plan to read this entire fascinating story that took place during WWII and continued after Israel became its own country. I agree with the 5 out of 5-star rating.

This memoir documents the author's life, starting with the events before his birth. The author and his family are lovers of education, and that shows in their achievements. They relocated from Jerusalem to France and, finally, Morocco. The author's love for mathematics remained constant.

"The Wandering Mathematician" by Shmuel Kantorovitz is a heartwarming memoir of growth, process and familial connections. The memoir captures the author's family life from his birth to his becoming a mathematician. One striking lesson from this book is the emphasis on the importance of having our family by our side no matter the stage we find ourselves in life.

My relationships with exact science are quite complicated, and therefore I seriously doubt that I will be able to connect with the life story of the mathematician and his points of view on the world. I believe they see from different perspectives, and migration from countries won't help the matter, since my own ancestor had to undertake this path as well. Sorry, I will have to pass, but still, congratulations on BOTD!
