The novel Conflict on the Yangtze by Greg Kater is an historical fiction. It is the fourth book of the Greg Kater’s Warramunga series. This novel unearths the eventualities of world war two and its aftermath in China. Wars are still ongoing in China despite world war two having come to an end. The Kuomintang government are in a battle with the communist led faction. They are in a supremacy battle to control China. The wars have resulted into many fatalities. However, there exists a gang group who are taking advantage of the warring situation in China. They are exporting opium from China to other states including Australia, USA, Philippines and other jurisdictions. The government is an accomplice to these illegal activities. It is this gang group that Jamie and Jacko have been mandated to track down. They are investigators of the Commonwealth Investigations Service based in Darwin, Australia. They move from Australia to China on a mission to track down the aforementioned gang group and put to an end their illegal drug trade.

This book’s plot development was amazing. The plot is just straightforward and direct from its onset. The author hits the nail on the head of the themes and content straight from chapter one. I was able to identify and understand the book’s flow straight from the setting. The author uses simple language in narration and hence boosted the understanding of the plot. Moreover, I had read the earlier books in the Warramunga series and could easily connect them with this particular novel. The author has done a good work in creating a connection with the book series. That is remarkable. Nonetheless, readers who have not read the other books in the series will still understand this novel since its content is direct and can stand alone as a novel.

Secondly, I loved the themes discussed by the author in the novel. Greg Kater discusses themes like romance, friendship and family unity, drug trafficking and war. These are themes that manifest themselves in the society. The readers can easily connect with them. I was particularly awed by the theme of friendship and family unity. The families and friends in the novel are closely connected and live a joyous life. Characters in the novel like Jacko, Jamie, Carna, Monique and Sarah enjoy such a close-knit friendship. Moreover, the love in Monique’s family is just lovely. Friends and family are always there for each other in the novel. That was excellent. The novel teaches readers on how to nurture friendship and family and their pivotal significance in our lives.

Additionally, I loved the comical aspect in the novel. Certain parts of this novel are just comical. I could not help bit giggle a bit in the course of reading the novel. For instance, the friendship between Jamie, Jacko, Carna, Sarah and Monique are just fun. They are constantly making fun about each other. Moreover, they engage in awkward activities that I could not help but laugh at. Their night out in the club while in Philippines was just funny. I could help but laugh at their different dances’ techniques. These and many more scenarios broke the monotony of the narration. I was often looking out to more of such comical scenarios while reading the novel.

There is nothing I disliked in this novel. I award it 4 out of 4 stars. The narration was interesting, amazing and a reflection of the growing challenges in the society. I could not for more of anything therein. I just enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it to persons interested in love and romance, and historical fictions. The love story of characters like Jacko and Monique and Jamie and Carna is just fascinating. Moreover, it well packed with good historical facts. On the other hand, readers with no interest in love and historical fictions may look for other novels.
