Apollo's Raven, is a masterful work of romance, history, passion and devotion. The author, Linnea Tanner, depicts strong relationships and family ties, while placing emphasis on the importance of devotion and loyalty in romantic relationships. Relationships are depicted as a way to strengthen the characters and their bonds to each other, whether it is the relationship between Catrin and her raven, depicted as a strong connection to the spiritual and earthly worlds, or the relationship between Marcellus and his father, Lucius Antonius, who is defined as the paterfamilias, the head decision-maker of the two. He represents part of the story's main element of control versus domination, as well as the forms of subordination that are present as the character's roles are defined. The first instance of profanity occurs on page 23, referring to the anatomical structure (the balls) of Marrock, Princess Catrin's half-brother.

The book was well-written, interesting, and Tanner expertly draws the reader in with its characters and accurately portrayed setting. Princess Catrin and Marcellus were wonderfully imagined characters and their bond showed true and genuine emotion that was captured beautifully by the author. The mix of languages shown by the Celtic language of Catrin's people and the Latin of the Romans was artfully done and added a truly convincing historical element to the book. Rituals, customs, and traditions were described in such a way that causes the reader to want to learn more and delve deeper into Roman and Celtic history. There was a great amount of action, passionate energy, peril and romance woven into this amazing tale. This book truly deserves a 4 out of 4.
