Review by KayD0814 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Charlie Sheldon knocked it out of the park with Strong Heart. He pulled me in from the very beginning and I couldn’t put the book down until it was done. I give this book 4 out 4 stars. It was perfectly written and exceptionally well edited. Strong Heart would be a perfect book for a Summer reading list during middle and high school. It has everything adventure, rebellion, humor, mystery and then some. Although I feel the book would be a great add to a summer reading list, I also think it is a great read for anyone who loves mystery mixed with science and debate about right and wrong, and a young teenage girl able to discover how strong she really is.
Tom, William, and Myra are getting packed for a camping trip when suddenly they hear a loud pounding on the door through thundering skies and falling rain. Upon opening the door, they are met by Toms’ ex-wife, Ruth, and a skinny, wet child. Tom is thrown into uncharted territory when he is left with, Sarah Cooley. A granddaughter he never knew existed. Left on his doorstep and Ruth gone, what was Tom to do? The camping trip needed to continue, and rebellious Sarah was going along for the ride.
Once in the Olympic National Park they have a long journey in front of them but to the extent of the journey no one really knew. This camping trip wasn’t just a regular trip to have fun. It was a mission. The mission was to return to a camping site Tom went with his grandfather. After days of hiking and camping in different parts of the park they finally get to the spot they would settle for only two nights before heading back home. At least this is what the plan was.
The plan changed when Sarah went missing. No one could find her. They looked for 8 days through pain and storms. Then while seeking shelter from a terrible storm under a cliff, Sarah appeared. She was dirty, hurt, and smaller than she was before. She slept and when she finally woke, she stayed silent until they headed back home. When Sarah did finally speak, she had the story of a century to tell. No one knew what to think or to believe her. Sarah was different. No one knew what had really happened to her, but her tale led them to a great adventure and a magically ending.
“They sang their stories long ago, this is what made us people.”
Strong Heart is a must read that you will not want to put down. Charlie Sheldon out did himself with the characters, the setting, the mood, and the linguistics. I can’t wait to read more from him and see what all he has to offer as an author.
