A Police Action by A. A. Freda is a historical-fiction novel set in the era of the Vietnam War. Contrary to what the title suggests, it is a steamy romantic story as opposed to the violence of war.

James Coppi is an Italian born American. He has been drafted in the army where he had served and currently remaining with only ten months to complete his service. However, news comes in that he is supposed to report to Fort Carson in Colorado, to a unit that will be deploying to Vietnam in a few months. While visiting a honky-tonk near the center of Colorado Springs, James meets Samantha, its love at first sight. They drink, dance and talk the whole night before they know it; they find themselves in a motel where steamy lovemaking follows. The next day brings a big surprise to James, Sam confesses that she is pregnant but does not know who the father of the baby is. With James scheduled to be deployed in a few months, what is going to happen to their newfound love? Will he survive the brutal war in Vietnam? Moreover, will their love survive the test of time and distance?

What I liked most in this book is its characters, they are well developed and distinguishable making it easier to relate and connect with them. For example, Coppi’s stubbornness and wittiness made him the most entertaining character of the story. He lightened the mood and paved way through his antics for the development of humor that mostly left me in fits of laughter. On the other hand, Sam’s development from a naive silly girl to a mature independent woman is well explained making the book even more entertaining. Realism is another part of this book that enhances the understanding and imagination of the situation. Coincidentally, when I was reading this book I happened to watch the Tet offensive documentary on a documentary channel hence I was able to relate emotionally and walk with characters in the horrors of the battlefield. This created a strong bond between the characters and me as I cheered them on and prayed for their survival. The betrayals and backstabbing were powerfully portrayed with grave consequences that left me in tears.

There is no downside in this book although I expected a high-paced action story with great and violent wars. It does not disappoint whatsoever as the romance and twists are great and emotional triggers. The book is well edited; I did not find a single error in the whole book. For this reason, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

It will appeal more to lovers of exotic romance and wars; however, people who love graphic war novels will not enjoy this book, as it is slow-paced. This book will not be suitable for young readers as it has exotic sexual content.
