Review by dimencia -- Containment Breach by Wm. A. Yandell
Nowadays it’s hard to find a good book to read. Again and again you return to your old faithful friends, classics. You know for sure, they won’t disappoint you. Maybe, as an astute detective, you will be able to find something new in something old, discover hidden truth, and those books will shine anew. Admit it. It's hard to accept, but books you liked in the past are now in the past. For those, who yearn to read good sci-fi, Containment Breach by Wm. A. Yandell is a real catch.
The protagonist of this novel is Dr Walter Smithton. He is a scientist, specializing in life forming. While not without not so noble character traits, he is a consistent and amicable man, caught in the middle of hostile environment, trying to survive. The main character's idol, Demetrius Zayack, with whom Dr Smithton shares a connection based on understanding, support his decisions from the background even dead. Creatures are filling the space ship, and they are not the greater evil here.
Reading this book, you can find, the author put great effort to keep it structured. Even from the first person perspective, where the main character can be easily seen as hollow or cracked due to mistakes on a writer's part, thoughts and dialogs here are well thought of. They are logical as they should be from the scientist's point of view. In my opinion, some plot twists are dubious(like artificially evil nature of Director Bush). Still, it can be written off to the Wm. A. Yandell's desire to convey main idea of the book.
Containment Breach is not boring by far. While I didn't read many, there are some sci-fi books, which resemble comics. Authors want to bring motion to the static word of paper, become addicted to verbs and lose the narration. Somehow Wm. A. Yandell was able to make action and pseudo-scientific talks coexist, while simultaneously bringing up Dr Smithton's character to the view.
I really liked this book. For some reason, it reminds me of old science fiction, and saying old I don't mean bad. I think, it's a great work, professionally polished, able to make a lasting impression. Understandably, due to certain amount of violence acts, I will only recommend it for adults, maybe above 25 years old.
So here we are, between chaotic desires and justly retribution, waiting for the Word's end. Evil in this work is the real Evil with no redemption traits, Good is nowhere to be found. I rate this book 4 out of 4. Let's discover what the new Word will bring us: Humanity's extinction or, finally, Humanity's growth.
