The Maztica Triology

I'm trying out a fantasy/adventure book (first in the Maztica triology) by Douglas Niles. It's titled IronHelm and the setting is on the continent Maztica. The books are supposedly a fantasy version of the discovery of America through the Mayan, Spanish, and Aztec culture. The main character is a slave girl named Erix, and she learns about a destiny that the gods have laid upon her. I'm only a few pages along, and I think it could be a worthwhile read. I'm not sure if I'll purchase the other two books, I heard mixed reviews about them so I might just own this one and get the rest from my library if I can.
