A well-orchestrated group of Muslims dressed in black carries out a terrifying mass shooting in a Beverly Hills mall. But that’s only part of the plot against America – next is the theft of a rare resource from NYC. Are the terrorists after the gold in the Federal Reserve? Lara and Uri of the FBI and Mossad, respectively, are tasked with stopping the murdering, thieving terrorists.

The Date Farm is the fourth book in Jack Winnick’s action-packed suspense series with Lara and Uri. The technology they face and use, along with the violence and hatred, make this book a horrifying read. I wanted to quit reading for a while because it was as depressing as the news – but at least I can assume the good guys will win in a novel! Weltschmerz-inducing or not, I already have another novel by Winnick that I look forward to reading.

Characters and motivations were well-developed and realistic. It was very easy to get caught up in the story and be appalled along with them at the events taking place. Lara and Uri’s relationship was romantic and sweet, though at times heart-breaking as they struggled with fear for the other’s safety. Anyone, especially Americans, wanting to read political suspense will want to check out this series. It’s a look at what we’re up against when dealing with Islamic terrorism. I doubt Muslims will be pleased with the books.

There were a couple of very amusing lines, something I always enjoy. Winnick’s excellent description of a phone ringing in the middle of the night is “…the enraged instrument”. His description of a helicopter dropping off personnel is even better, but I’ll let the reader find that. The writing overall achieved the right balance between detail and action, as there was never a problem picturing the scenes, while still not being bogged down in overdone detail.

The Date Farm gets 4 out of 4 stars from me. There were few errors, no explicit scenes, and little profanity. It brought to light some things that I didn’t know were (and still hope aren’t) true. One example is that American taxpayers’ money is used to give grants to students from enemy countries to attend top-level universities in our country! It reminded me that I have heard that before when a terrorist is arrested – that he graduated from Harvard or some such school. So we’re forced to pay to teach our enemies how to destroy us.
