Review by inmod -- A Police Action by A. A. Freda
A Police Story is a historical romance fiction written by A. A. Freda. It tells a romance story about a young man who accidentally involved with a beautiful young lady. The story revolved around their daily lives during the Vietnam war period.
James Coppi was drafted to Vietnam when he met a beautiful young girl, Sam Powers, in a fateful night out to a club. After a lovely night out, Sam confided to Coppi about her weighing problems. Coming from a religious family in Texas, Sam found the excitement in her new life in Colorado. She went into trouble and desperately seeking for alternatives to get out of it. On the other hand, Coppi, an assigned soldier who readily enlisted to Vietnam, was looking out for himself all his life. Helplessly falling in love with Sam at the first sight, Coppi made his way to help the girl. They looked for each other in Colorado, but what would happen to Sam after Coppi made his way to Vietnam?
This book is a historical fiction, as all the environments appeared was set during the Vietnam war. The storyline and the characters were fitting to the era. For example, the value of the money perceived in the story was related to that time, as the rent and salaries were approximately twenty-five dollars per month. During the Vietnam war, people who voluntarily signed up for the Army was called a lifer. The choice of the words thoughtfully portrayed the life and distress of soldiers during the war. The terminologies used were appropriate for the incidents happening in the story, either in America or Vietnam. For example, Coppi could think quickly and demonstrate credible solutions at every turn. It truly reflects the character of Coppi by showing us his way of thinking and how he views things differently.
The writer had done an excellent job by introducing all the characters well throughout the story. The background and the characteristics of all people mentioned in the book were beautifully curated. All of the characters had their struggles, making the incidents looked real to the readers. The write-ups about Coppi and Sam was engaging. They were seen as regular people who coincidently fell in love and tolerated each other together despite having different personalities. It was a heartwarming to see how they struggled to make their relationship alive and made each other happy. The informative look into the characters as well as the thrilling plot makes the book more enjoyable to read.
The element that I liked most about the book is the style of writing. The author has beautifully written about the lives of the soldiers as they were waiting to be flown to a new, unfamiliar place. They also shared how they tolerated each other despite having their own issues. The story tone is warm and its storyline is exceptional. However, I'm not too fond of the inconsistent point of views written by the author. The storytelling included the first person points of view. It became the third-person storytelling in a sudden as the story progressed. However, it didn't hinder my reading.
Therefore, I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. There is no major flaw in this book and it is well-edited. Every event and the narrated characters made this book a page-turner, and I enjoyed reading it. The book is suitable for adults who like to read about historical fiction or romance fiction. However, it is unsuitable for young adults because of the explicit romantic and battle scenes written in the story. The storyline was easy to understand, and it shows a captivating and creative writing style of the author.
