I give this book 4 stars out of 5, there are possible spoilers in the review.
This dystopian, science fiction novel was something different from those novels I normally read, I was not sure exactly what to expect when I chose it so I don´t really have much to compare it with. It is the first book I have read by this author. Paolo Bacigalpui has won the 2011 Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature for this book, and he has also won other awards for some of his other novels.
The whole book makes you really think about global warming, oil, the environment and if this may or not actually happen in the future.
The novel is based in the future, a rather dark future, where the environment is wrecked, the ice caps have melted, the water has risen so much that entire cities are under water and people have had to survive. Nailer a young ship breaker, works on the light crew dismantling huge oil tankers, the work is really tough, where you need to have someone to watch your back at all times. And even then things can go wrong. Nailer has a tough alcoholic dad who doesn´t have the best relationships with his son, they live on the beach in a shack and food is hard to come by. There is another side to the world though, the rich people and their clippers with all the modern devices, and when Nailer and his friend Pima find a clipper washed and wrecked from a recent storm they see dollars but inside is a young girl needing help, here is when Nailer must face a very difficult choice.
The descriptions where incredibly real and loads of detail, I could almost smell the oil, sweat and feel the heat of the sun as well as see the living conditions. The writing is equally great, there is plenty of action going on, quite violent at times.
It took me quite a few chapters to figure out that the plot takes place in the USA, from the descriptions I thought it was India or Bangladesh. I didn´t totally understand what was going on as the author doesn´t explain much about the global warming you kind of have to pick this up yourself. The book also goes on a little too much about the bad relationship between Nailer and his dad, a little excessive I thought.
But over all I really enjoyed the book, fast paced, with loads going on and I loved the detail, I recommend to give it a go, and don´t think too much that it is for young adults.
