Have you ever reached a point in your life that you always dreamed about being at, however, there was still something amiss? Maybe you are with the wrong partner. Maybe you have suffered a great loss. Maybe your dream career isn’t what you expected. For Jill Bradley, this sense of foreboding is very real and she will quickly discover that fate has other things planned for her than her original mapped out life.

Jill, an ambitious twenty-something nurse, has the “perfect” boyfriend, loving family, and promising career. However, sometimes being so devoted to your job can cause problems, as Jill finds out after volunteering to work a double shift one night. After narrowly surviving a horrific car crash, Jill learns that a young couple was not so lucky and what’s worse, they have left behind an orphaned infant. As if this wasn’t enough weight on Jill’s conscience, during her recovery she learns of more heartbreaking news as well as secrets that will threaten to unravel her. After all of this, who wouldn’t need a break? Jill decides to take a spontaneous vacation to a new tourist hot spot in the Caribbean where she finds more than just a time-out from life in the form of a handsome dive instructor, Bane. Jill is tossed around on a roller coaster ride that is sometimes life, and we see a girl evolve into a strong woman.

I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The story is romantic, heartbreaking, and inspiring. I found Jill relatable on several levels, being in my mid-twenties myself. If I wasn’t seeing myself in her, I saw my best friend, my mom, or someone I would aspire to be. Although it has the subject matter of so many novels I have read before, it is anything but predictable or boring. It will make you swoon, gasp in surprise, and cry. The story is too well written and engaging to be rated 2 stars. It wasn’t quite 4 stars for me, but the strongest 3 stars you could have. I feel like there should have been more build up before the conclusion and that ended a bit abruptly.

Susan Allison-Dean is a wonderful story teller. Her characters are full of life and you find yourself completely engrossed in the story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, especially young girls or mothers. I judge a book on how quickly I read it and how often I think about it when I’m not reading – this was one of those books I spent all of my free time reading and thinking about it before I went to sleep. Simply put, it’s a story about growing, learning to deal with road blocks, and finding oneself. Allison-Dean’s writing is such a joy to read that it makes you excited to read more and anticipate her other works.
