Aunt Mary Opal, an older lady with more secrets than you can imagine, befriends three younger women and together these women from a family. Rachel, the neglected wife of a famous musician, who is taking care of and losing her mother to cancer, is the first to meet Aunt Mary Opal. While on a trip, she meets Jesi, a wild child with more money and spirit than she knows what to do with. Jesi follows Rachel back home to meet Aunt Mary Opal. While on one of their ladies day out trips, they meet another woman in an unusual way. The woman Nicole, is in a crisis that they could never imagine. Without realizing it they save her life. Together these four women form a family that is right out of Steel Magnolias.

These women, from different generations and backgrounds, are a complete contradiction. Aunt Mary Opal is tiny, yet she drives a huge SUV. Rachel is tall and statuesque however she drives a tiny mini Cooper. Jesi is wild, outspoken with a hot temper. Nicole is withdrawn and is scared of love. Their past and current situations intertwine with each other. They all have secrets.

One day Aunt Mary Opal finds out that an illness from her past is back with a vengeance. Rather than go through treatment that will lessen her quality of life, she comes up with a plan to die with dignity. She of course keeps her diagnosis a secret from her new friends. She also gets help from and meets two other women who agree to keep her secret and help her with her plan. She also leaves a plan in place for the two groups of women to possibly meet each other in the future. In the meantime, she plans to teach these woman, who are more like daughters to her than her own daughters, about life and themselves. The adventures they have will make you laugh, cry and just about every emotion in between.

My favorite part of Backcomb and Tattoo by Shea R Embry is the friendship between these women. They way they show how friends can become family. There wasn't anything that I disliked or that was boring. I really enjoyed the bond they formed and I look forward to the sequel. I give this book a 4 out of 4.

I believe anyone who enjoys stories of women bonding, southern culture, and stories of women helping women, will enjoy this well edited book.
