Review by Ehardin3 -- The Gryphon by Paula Grover
In a world filled with majestic creatures such as gryphons, hippogryphs, opinici, and humans referred to as “hophas,” The Gryphon by Paula Grover is a fantastical story that keeps the reader enthralled through its over two hundred pages. Grover takes readers on a journey following the princess of the gryphonic people “Sunsky” through her fall from grace to her triumphant return. We meet numerous characters along the way, all with their own strong well-developed characteristics such as the hippogryph Night Lover and the opinici Dreamspinner. The characters face a journey riddled with tyranny, social injustice, and love as Sunsky and her family seek to bring peace to the land of Gryphonia.
The book is filled with royal hierarchy speak, which was confusing to understand and slightly frustrating at first, but within the first fifty pages, this was no longer an issue. There are also numerous characters named in the story who play an essential role. Remembering who the characters are and how they are related and in what manner took some time. But these points did not take away the joy of reading this book.
The relationships between the characters, especially those between our main character Sunsky and her family, can easily be felt. The author did a fantastic job, making us feel as though these characters loved each other. There is a slight mention of sexual behavior during “mating,” but it is not graphic and is an integral part of the story. The author also did a fantastic job describing the characters so that we could understand why they acted in particular manners. We see the struggle with a longing for personal happiness and what is expected by the strict social norms that are part of the gryphonic society. This clashing was one of the most exciting aspects of the book.
We see our main character Sunsky grow from being a spoiled princess who is naïve about the world and the other beings who are deemed “less than” the gryphons and opinicis; to a wise leader who respects all walks of life. This development was another fantastic part of this journey. Many of the characters had a development of this sort as well, which made liking the numerous characters easy as well.
This book has an exciting storyline and strong, likable characters. I was pleased to find that the editing seemed to be professionally done as I only found one or two errors in the entire book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Grover does a fantastic job taking the reader on a thrilling journey in this book. Her attention to detail is impressive as we can nearly imagine the mythical beings that she is describing. The ending was different than I expected it to be which added another layer to this already exciting tale. I recommend this book for anyone who loves the fantasy genera and is looking for a new original story filled with adventure from beginning to end.
