Official Review: A Love Like No Other
A Love Like No Other by Nancy Taylor Robson is an interesting read about the life of Abigail, wife of John Adams. The story is told from her perspective, beginning with when she was a little girl all the way through John Adams’ presidency. Abigail endured many hardships, including being away from her husband and having to raise children on her own, along with running their farm. She went through losing babies and family members and managed to get on by herself while John was away building the new country. Abigail took a lot of pride in John’s work and encouraged it, even though it meant they would be apart often, but she did get to travel and see other cities and countries due to John’s positions. This is a wonderful story showing how strong a woman can be when the need arises, and all of the hardships she can overcome without the help of a man, but it is also a story of everlasting love that did not die out as they grew older or across distance and time, but endured until the end.
I give this book three out of four stars because it is a little slow in some places. Some scenes have a lot of little details, but it all adds to the story. There was just so much to tell that it is understandable, but sometimes it was a little hard to keep reading. Overall the book is great. The author writes beautifully and clearly expresses herself in her writing, making the story clear and vivid.
This is a memorable book because of the everlasting love that is shown between Abigail and John Adams. From the moment they started to love each other they never stopped and their love never lessened, which is proven by how they remain loyal to each other even through the space and time they are apart, sometimes many years at a time.
Abigail’s strength is another aspect that really makes this book stand out, as it portrays that many women are very strong and can take on a lot along and still survive. She manages to run the farm by herself when John is away, managing all of the servants and farm hands, along with raising her children. She goes through pregnancy with birthing with him gone, and takes care of other family members such as his mother.
The author did a great job with portraying the different relationships Abigail had with everyone, such as her love for her husband, her dislike for her mother-in-law which transformed into love, and her concern for her children, especially Charley and Nabby. The relationships are very well developed and change throughout the book, showing how she progresses in each relationship, usually each with more love and concern than earlier.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This is a great book to read, especially if one is interested in the history of the United States and how it was built. There is a lot of historical aspects of it that ties history into the literature in an entertaining way.
