Review by Amanda Howard -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story of history, legend, and family. The novel follows the adventures of Tom Olson and his abandoned granddaughter, Sarah, after she appears on his doorstep. Sarah is a troubled 13-year-old girl who interrupts Tom's camping trip to visit his Native American grandfather's grave. Tom decides to bring Sarah along for the journey. Sarah disappears for several days and loses an important ancient artifact. During her disappearance, Sarah has a vision that inspires the secondary plot of the novel. The reader is transported back in time to learn about a mysterious and dangerous journey of a young girl named Strong Heart.
What I liked most about the book was the narration and the beautiful imagery transcribed throughout the story. Sheldon depicts stunning scenery to set the stage for his captivating storytelling. Strong Heart is packed with adventure, knowledge, and history that is beautifully told by author Charlie Sheldon. The book was well-written and edited, allowing the reader to become fully immersed in the story.
What I disliked most about the book was the ending. There is a sequel to Strong Heart, called Adrift, that Sheldon was likely preparing for when he wrote the ending to Strong Heart. Without giving away too much detail, the ending left unresolved conflict and a missed opportunity for character development. It is important to note that this critique is a personal preference.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I had a difficult time reading Strong Heart at first because it is not the genre of book that I expected or am interested in. However, I quickly became engrossed in the story and could not put it down. I also shared pieces of the book with my husband, who enjoys mythology and history, and he became interested in reading it and is going to purchase the book himself to support the author. The story is free of errors and flows well, allowing for an easy read. I personally disliked the ending, but I am looking forward to reading Adrift and continuing the story.
This book would most appeal to readers of historical fiction, fantasy, and mythology. Strong Heart quickly unfolds into a tale of legend and magic that may be off-putting for traditional realistic fiction readers. I would recommend this book to young adults or adults who are comfortable with strong language and violent themes that may not be suitable for younger or more sensitive readings.
