Disnae Matter What The Rouge Lobster Sings by Mickey Walsh Jr. is a funny, light-hearted book about Damo Delaney’s life after university. Growing up, teachers tell you “if you don’t work hard, you’ll end up stacking shelves at a supermarket”. However, as the book states, that once you’ve obtained a degree, supermarkets occasionally turn you down.

Damo Delaney has graduated from university and did everything right, yet he is jobless and broke. He currently lives with his friend from university, QC, who is a trainee solicitor. The book takes us on a hilarious journey as we see Damo mess up multiple job interviews, and have crazy days at work placements. This 67-page book will have you laughing to the end, and brighten up your day. With such a short number of pages, this book can be enjoyed in one sitting.

The cover of the book is what initially grabbed my attention, I love the simple illustration and the title. I like that the book is written in the first person; it feels like he is talking to you. As a reader, being able to read his thoughts and feelings was important as this is what made me feel closer to the character. Another thing I liked about the book was how the author included lots of references from movies throughout the book. It was just interesting to see the author apply things from movies to the present day, and overall, this just made the book much more enjoyable.

There was nothing that I disliked about the book, everything about it was amazing. The author had an idea, and they executed it perfectly. The author’s style of writing is great, it’s easy to read, with no complicated language, and it feels like a conversation. The book teaches a lot of important messages such as, don’t give up on your dreams, and that you should always live in the present and take things one step at a time.

In conclusion, I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars because it was a fantastic read, and once I started reading it, I found it difficult to put it down. I found only a couple of mistakes in the book, so it is professionally edited. I would recommend this book to young adults and above. If you’re looking for a light-hearted, quick read for the evening, then definitely give this book a go.
