Review by OB Brian -- The Hand Bringer
Christopher J. Penington’s The Hand Bringer is a fictional tale of Peter Hadrian, a young police officer in Dallas, and his friends on their mission to eradicate vampirism that threatens to plague the whole world.
The story begins with Peter, "the infant hand bringer", being attacked by a vampire. Unlike previous assaults by vampires on humans, Peter survives the attack. The interest of the Apocalypse Suppression Administration(ASA) - a well-funded, top-secret branch of the government that contains paranormal events and protects people from the supernatural - is piqued by peter’s survival of a direct attack from a vampire.
In ASA, Peter meets Boriana; a beautiful, five-hundred-year-old vampire, who mysteriously knows Peter. Alongside his friend Luke, and Bat (an ex-con), Peter gets genetically enhanced into an insanely strong and fast vampire hunter, having the ability to heal when injured. ASA’s plan to eradicate vampirism is to find and kill the first vampire in history- Vlad Dracula, the Impaler. Peter is their designated kryptonite.
The three vampire hunters, together with ASA’s Doctor Kolemis and Colonel Scott are sent back in time to 1476 Romania, on a three-year-mission to hunt and kill Vlad Dracula. Kolemis, however, has a different plan, a secret mission that endangers the human race.
Christopher J. Penington’s The Hand Bringer has sixty-two chapters, with most of the story taking place in medieval Romania. Peter finds Vlad Dracula, who is human despite the sightings of "strigoi", the undead in Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania. To complete his mission, Peter embarks on an adventurous search for the original vampire. He meets the human Boriana with whom he has a romantic relationship, and battles for and against Dracula in the process.
I enjoyed every bit of the story. The humorous dialogues were especially captivating. The mysteries of the book had me on the edge of my seat, from the first page to the last. The author’s ability to vividly describe the setting of the book, especially the battlefields, captured my mind, enabling me to follow the narration as though I was there. Besides, the book was professionally edited, with only two grammatical errors in the entire book.
The Hand Bringer by Christopher J. Penington is a book you don’t want to miss. The cover page alone is self-explanatory and the English used is simple. There is, however, the presence of profane language and erotic scenes, which may not be appealing to some readers. That said, the book is fantastic, and therefore deserving a wholehearted 4 out of 4 stars rating. I recommend it to anyone looking for a captivating and equally puzzling story.
