Review by Ify_Reviewer -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
[Following is a volunteer review of "Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)" by Barry Litherland.]
Waves Break (On Unknown Shores) is a tale of childhood experience having a ripple effect the rest of one's adult life. Phil the protagonist and a well-developed narrator gives a vivid narration in the first person of his unlikely friendship with Wayne. A friendship that dates back to their childhood and with a fair share of traumatic events that tied them together. Wayne has been like a leech stuck on Phil and now as adults, Phil feels an obligation to support him while they try to put the past behind them. However, this became difficult as Wayne is suspected of a high profile burglary in town which had people from their past emerging from the woods.
Barry Litherland did an excellent job in the way that he flips the story between the innocence of childhood and the challenging adult lives of the characters. The characters are well-developed personalities with striking attributes that made them realistic and plausible. The plot is centered around friendship, violence, suspicion, murder, loyalty, and betrayal. There is also a hint of romance but then it was just enough to serve as a spice.
I like the fact that everything about Waves Break —characters, plots, and storyline— feels real and very relatable. There is also good control of the suspense, drama, and mystery. Most interesting to me is the portrayal of the protagonist, Philip Tyler. His witty descriptions, sarcasm, and sense of dry humor give the story a good flow and the reader engaged.
I understand that this is an adult book with a crime theme but then the use of profane words was a bit of overload. Almost every sentence starting from the first page has profanity gracing it, children dialogue inclusive. It must have conveyed the message but I think with a lot less of profanity the message would as well be conveyed. The overuse of derogatory words was my dislike in the book.
The use of profane words notwithstanding, I think Barry Litherland did exceptional work with Waves Break(On Unknown Shores). The writing style, the development of characters and plots, the simplicity of presentation, the flawless editorial work, and plausibility makes me want to read other works by Litherland. I rate the book four out of four stars and will recommend the book to all lovers of crime thriller, semblance of a real-life story, childhood tales, and mystery. Caution: if you cannot withstand profanity, please don't bother.
