Review by Judylaboso -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a fictional novel that employs epic and adventure with a focus on archaeological history and research to determine the origin of humans. Tom has planned a camping trip in the mountains of Olympic peninsula and invites his friends William and Myra to accompany him. He is on a quest to visit his grandfather’s grave, more importantly, because a local mining industry is trying to establish a mine up in the mountains.
Tom’s granddaughter, Sarah, is dropped off unannounced by his ex-wife at his doorstep on a rainy night just on the eve of the camping trip. Sarah is a rebellious teen with a strong spirit who likes to speak up her mind. Tom is taken aback by this development and is having second thoughts about the trip. However, It is finally decided that Sarah would join them despite her reluctance to journey with them.
Tom comes from a native heritage and is determined to keep it alive. He learnt about his background from his late grandfather during their camping trips and he tells his friends and granddaughter about it during their camping night as they talk about ancient history and evolutionary changes brought about by an ice-age. The mission is half-fulfilled when Sarah goes missing because of her stubborn nature. She reappears after eight days badly wounded and semiconscious. She later recounts of an adventure she went through, something that completely changes her demeanour. The others find her hard to believe but her little adventure earned her the name Strong Heart.
I was impressed by the way Charlie Sheldon built his characters right from the start. The clear description of their geographical location and their persona made it so easy to follow the story. The author’s marine knowledge and experience play a big role in creating images in the mind of the reader especially as described in Sarah’s story. I could easily picture the characters interacting with one another.
What I liked the most was the book's structure and arrangement that gave it a seamless flow. I did not notice any major spelling or grammar errors, the book was definitely edited professionally. There were no erotic scenes nor use of vulgar words.
Generally, Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a well built, professionally written and enjoyable book. His blend of characters gave the book a twist of drama. For these reasons, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to a reader who loves fantasy, adventure and history.
