Review by Lioncub58 -- So, You're Raising Your Grandkids!
I'll be reviewing ( title itallic)[/I] "So You're Raising Your Grandkids!" [/I], written by Harriet Hodgson. The book is about exactly what the title suggests, grandparents that are raising their grandkids. The book reports that there are absolutely millions and millions of grandparents taking on this role today. There are also overwhelming issues that confront those who accept these roles and responsibilities. I found the book to be very well written and easy to follow. There was a substantial abundance of resources and an extraordinary amount of information to absorb and contemplate. The way Ms. Hodgson presented the information is in measurements that you can easily process and I was impressed with that throughout the book
The author also touched on so many possible emotions that could come up in this role. She only gave enough personal information to make it real then went right into a resource you could use for your own situation. I really liked the way she did this and the way the book flowed because of it. Author Hodgson continued to blend personal excerpts with published works of the same subject all the way through the book and it continued to hold my interest. I expected there to be some point I would reach where I may get bored, but my interest stayed peaked until the very end.
Another aspect I enjoyed and found very helpful was that the author listed pros and cons to taking on this role and for those who already have. I also thought it was great that she re-capped the chapters with lists that put it all in perspective for the reader. The resources and articles that Ms. Hodgson cited throughout the book are invaluable tools and I found myself wanting to make these known and available to many individuals that I personally know who are currently in this role with their own grandkids.
I related to many of the situations that the author brought up. I had the honor of living with my daughter and her three children for about ten years and so many of these things came up for us as well even though our situation was a little different. I looked up many of the cited articles and was able to learn something valuable from each one of them. Anyone considering this responsibility should read this book. The experience can be very rewarding if you have the right information.
I found only two errors in the entire book. One on page three of the Forward, the word my appears simultaneously and then on page 114 the word with appears the same way. There was no profanity at all. This book gets (rating bold)[/b] 4 stars out of 4 [/b] from me.
