Official Review: At Last by Susan Thatcher
[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "At Last" by Susan Thatcher.]
At Last by Susan Thatcher is a fictional, romance novel that is a sequel to her first book, These Foolish Things. The stories are a story being told by a wife, Elizabeth Gardner, to her husband, Tyrone Hadley, who lies in a hospital bed in a coma. Though fictional, both stories, promote awareness of alcoholism and breast cancer, and how easily both cases can make or break you. The story was very easy to be able to relate to in the sense of how important it is to remain strong for family members during hard times and be there for each other rather than run away.
At last is a story full of love, happiness, humor, sadness and frustration. The romance in the novel was very subtle and I enjoyed that immensely. It was not provocative and erotic like a lot of romance novels that I have read. The author shows the importance of family. Even if they are not blood related, they will always be there for you no matter the situation. All of the characters where very well put together, each with their own uniqueness. The detail that went into the book was very well thought out and allowed the reader to be able to imagine what was going on and see it as if they were watching a movie.
Elizabeth Gardner "Hadley" is a cancer survivor who is finally with the love of her life and building a family with him when events turn south and fate tests her and her husband, Tyrone Hadley. Both in their 40's are forced to face their demons and grow stronger, or break away from each other and crumble. Through the story Elizabeth is talking to her husband's unconscious form, recounting memories and events up the last last few minutes she saw him. I believe he was trying preparing herself for the worst and possibly hoping he would hear her and wake up. Both in their mid to late forties, and being fairly new to marriage and having small kids, she was not ready for him to leave because they still had a lot of learning and growing to do.
As much as I enjoyed the story, there were a few points in the book that kept me from really loving it. There were some pages throughout the book that held several mistakes; misplaced words, missing punctuation and misspelled words. Some of them left me having to reread the same sentence several times trying to figure out what the author was trying to say. Then end of the book, I enjoy reading a book that leaves you with your imagination to decide what happens, however, I felt with this book, there should have been more detail to the end, instead I felt as if the author was just trying to finish it up. I was left wanting more information.
I give this book a 2 (fair) out of 4 stars because though it is a good book and I enjoyed it. I didn't enjoy the ending or the mistakes strewn throughout the book. I do believe others will enjoy the book if they don't mind wanting more information at the end and are fine having to reread sentences more than once to see what the author was trying to say.
