Review by Readinggrl18 -- Days of Future Found
In a world that has endured so much pain, loss and struggle, two friends take a journey out of their predictable, safe lives into an experience of possibility in M.K.Wark’s Days of Future Found. The story takes place after nuclear war, a mass- killing virus, climate change and mass infertility. A rebuilding brings a life of structure to the occupants of the new society. Their health is tracked constantly and studies are available to increase life spans as well as help with fertility. They are given a life of security in exchange for fully accepting the ways of simplicity.
We meet Ella, a woman in her sixties who has the health of someone at least fifteen years younger. She has lost family and friends but works to stay positive in her work life, home life and personal relationships. Riley is her best friend. She is a generation younger and feels much older in her weary body. She has a much less positive outlook on life than her friend, with theories of conspiracy and fears of the encroachment of society.
Along with a few neighbors and co-workers, we see a search for new meaning of life and death in this mundane, well-structured and safe society. Riley sees a cruise ship wheeling old people on gurneys and has a theory that something evil is happening. Ella is given a trip to be further studied and Riley takes an assignment to be there in case things go sour. Together they seek to find out what is really happening to all the old people. This book gives a great look into how people of all ages and backgrounds can be affected by huge changes in the world around them and how all people want to find purpose, adventure and peace.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was an engaging read with few typos or grammatical errors and moved at a great pace. The characters were relatable and endearing and I wanted to know more about them and their histories. What I liked most about this book was the contrast of life stages and perspectives of the characters and how they dealt with one another and the world they lived in. What I disliked somewhat was that before the ending there was no subversion of expectations before wrapping Ella’s story to a predictable but meaningful end. If I could have given it 3 ½ stars, I would have for the lack of twists and turns.
I would recommend this book to teenagers through adults of all ages as it could appeal to several stages of life and had only a few minor curse words and no sexual scenes or inappropriate content. I would seriously recommend it to anyone who loves dystopian society stories. It was a quick read and grabbed me right from the start. I just hope it is really fiction and not a prediction of our future to be found.
