Hillport has been destroyed and along with it so has Magnum Caelum's iron supply. A dangerous situation to Galen Bray's newly inherited forgery. He, Demetrius, and Rowan must travel to the industrious city of Virko in search of connections to a fresh supply. In doing so they become entangled in the web of mysteries that is Virko. A new age bares down on the leading city in the revolution of Voulhire. Yet the madness of the mystery only serves to incorporate the trio into the ensuing craziness of the kingdom of Voulhire. Demetrius is compelled to save the city that he called home in his childhood but can he save the capitalistic city that is seemingly hell itself?

With continued ruthlessness and grace, Matthew Tysz thickens the plot in his second novel We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko in his We are Voulhire and series. Having read the first novel, I can only proclaim as to how well the storyline has been maintained. The gashes in the fabric of the kingdom that is Voulhire only continue to get wider and with nine books in the series it seems Matthew Tysz has no intention of sewing them together yet.

My favorite aspect in this second novel in the We are Voulhire series has to be the expert build up of the events in the series. The main characters who seemed ever so slightly disconnected from the main flow of events in the entire plot are now fully incorporated in the story. The events build up with a lot of pace which made the novel a thrilling and highly entertaining read.

The main issue I was not fully satisfied with in the first novel, was how the kingdom of Voulhire was so advanced in scientific knowledge yet they were a society that was just exiting the dark ages. It was a surprise to realize that people who had discovered cancer and the atom still mostly used candles and torches to light their households and castles. This accelerated progress in science is in no small way attributed to the successful integration of magic in the scientific process. It is explained in this second novel that with the help of magic all these scientific discoveries that were beyond their technology at the time are made possible. This in effect eliminates the only problem I had with the series and I, therefore, found nothing to dislike about the novel.

Like in the first novel where I found only one noteworthy typo, in the second I found only a handful. The consistently professional editing along with the thrilling, entertaining, and fast-paced plot in the novel lead me to rate it 4 out of 4.

Unlike the series opener, I found a higher prevalence of sexual content as well as the use of profane language. This novel is therefore not suitable for younger readers. This series also maintains a fictional religion known as destinisim, therefore readers who are sensitive to religious content in novels would do well not to pick this novel up. This novel also possesses several violent scenes and strong gay implications readers who are sensitive to both would do well to steer clear of this novel. For those readers who enjoy a thrilling, fast-paced sci-fi/fantasy novel and are not restricted by the content warnings above I would highly recommend this novel. I personally would really like to know the direction in which Matthew Tysz takes this series, as it seems the characters are now so far down in a pit that it almost seems the author can no longer make it any deeper. Almost.
