John Galsworthy

Post by Estella Magwitch »

Is anyone familiar John Galsworthy? He was an Edwardian author who was immensely popular in his time, but is poorly known and read now. His major work is The Forsyte Saga, spanning, I think, from 1906-1921.
I've been reading and rereading the first book, A Man of Property, off and on since I found the book in the library as a teenager. I'm pretty sure no one had checked it out in years. I love it, though. There's something so luminous and sad about it, if you can get past the first dry chapters. I love Old Jolyon, who is in his last summer, I love Irene, and I loathe Soames.
Has anyone read Galsworthy, or am I the only one?

I remember the fabulous BBC TV adaptation of The Forsyte Saga way back - I always loved those kind of period dramas that the BBC do so well.
