Review by nikkiloveskiwi -- Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday...
Idiom Attack Volume 1: Everyday Living by Peter N. Liptak is a useful and an easy to understand book, which is all about idioms that can be used for everyday life. With a total amount of 300 idioms, this book aims to give its readers a good amount of idioms that can be applied for different situations. With that in mind, this book not only provides English translation, but also gives the Chinese translation of the idioms and explanations for better understanding also to its Chinese readers.
One of the things that I really liked and appreciated about this book is that it provides a few activities wherein readers could really make use of the idioms provided in the given chapters. Chapters in this book are divided according to its category, such as weather, for traffic, for dining, for shopping, and etc. One of the book’s strong points is that the idioms used are really something you could use for your everyday life, and is something easy to familiarize yourself with.
Idioms are first given and used in sentences for easy understanding of the words. After that, there would be the fill in the blanks activity wherein readers would be testing their understanding of the idioms and apply it. In addition to that, there would be another activity that would further enhance the readers’ understanding of the idioms. As the closing activity for each chapter, there are stories provided which also contains the idioms discussed in each chapter. With the stories provided, there are questions also provided for discussion to gain better understanding of the idioms used.
What I also appreciate about the book is after the stories provided in each chapter, the author also provides questions for its readers touching on their personal lives and using the idioms. With this, the author aims to connect more of its readers on a personal basis since readers could really reflect on the questions about their lives, aside from learning the idioms. It is just like hitting two birds in one stone- learning idioms, while also reflecting on your personal life. Despite having several activities to really engage its readers and practice their understanding on the idioms given, I don’t think the crossword puzzles were necessary. This is one thing that I did not like so much about this book.
Overall, this book is something that I would strongly recommend for readers who want to gain better understanding of idioms. This would strongly help readers who want to learn English better. One of the strong points of this book is also that it provides Chinese translation, so that it would also help readers who are fluent in Chinese and would want to be more proficient with the English language. Aside from that, there are several activities given to ensure that the readers would be really able to test out and apply the given idioms in each chapter. Because of that, I would rate this book 4 out of 4. If you are interested in learning about English idioms that you can apply for everyday living, this is a good book to jumpstart learning English idioms.
