Review by Grace Macharia -- A Long Dark Rainbow
Finding love at an old age is one of those things that many people would view as impossible. Finding a romance story involving elderly people is even harder...well, at least it was for me until now.
Michael Tappenden breaks the norm of young -character -based romance novels as he takes us on this interesting and eye -opening journey that is, A Long Dark Rainbow.
In this story, we get to meet Alexander (Alex for short). At over seventy years of age and about forty years since he last saw her, he gets to meet Samantha Reagan (Sam) again, and the two instantly feel a connection. By this time, Sam is divorced and Alex is single having never married. The two decide to give a romantic relationship a chance albeit challenges they soon learn to face and overcome together.
First of all, both being elderly people, they have insecurities in regards to their physical appearances together with the mistakes and choices they've both made along the way. Sam for one doesn't feel as elegant and attractive as she used to be a couple of decades earlier. Alex also feels old and incompetent in terms of pleasing a woman sexually and emotionally. There is one instance in the story where Sam contemplates leaving a button or two of her blouse open in order to show some cleavage so as to appear attractive to Alex. She soon decides against it as her insecurities come rising to the surface and she decides to just stay fully covered.
The two running into each other again after so many years is pure coincidence, one which transforms the rest of their lives completely. They find acceptance in each other. They learn to embrace their flaws together. They learn to open up to each other about about their secrets and fears and desires without fear of rejection or embarrassment. Alex lets Sam in on his secret concerning his children, ones he never got to meet and instead of judgment, he's met with understanding and compassion from Sam. Sam also supports Alex in his passion as an artist encouraging Alex to do portraits of her. She organizes an art gallery show for Alex's paintings which works to popularize his work as well as boost Sam's confidence in herself as a beautiful woman despite her advanced age.
I like how this story portrays hope for finding love at any age. It is not only a romance story but also one of hope, forgiveness and self -discovery. The story also appears to be professionally edited as I found very few errors therein. The story is interesting from beginning to the end and I found no part of it unnecessary.
The story does contain vulgar language as well as sexual content hence I would not recommend it to children or people uncomfortable with such method of writing.
Due to the captivating nature of the story as well as the few errors contained within it, I award A Long Dark Rainbow 4 out of 4 stars.
