The Short, The Sweet, and The Not So Sweet by Ian E. Rabbitt is a collection of some powerful poetry pieces. Love is the theme that weaves all of the poetry together. There are expressions of regret, hope, joy, pain and fulfilment. The various emotions that we experience in life are brought to life and expressed with such bluntness; you have to stop and think. Not every poem will relate directly to you, but each one will speak to you.

There are 4 sections, The Short, The Sweet, The Not So Sweet and Extras. The section, The Short, demonstrates that you do not have to say much to express everything. The section, The Sweet, expresses the beauty of love; the joy, the fulfilment and everything in-between. The section, The Not So Sweet, brings out the ugly emotions of a broken heart – to have loved and not been loved back in equal measure. “Extras” are the glue that holds everything together, and put things into perspective with a message of hope and encouragement.

The author skillfully uses simple language. Even when the author expresses bitterness; it is not repulsive. I could see it for what it is; the cries of a broken heart. It takes skill to communicate that effectively. I did not come across any words that required me to find my dictionary, yet the author still managed to inject depths of meaning into every word that he used.

I enjoyed the author’s ability to load meaning within a few words. It is an enviable skill with a tremendous amount of power. Consider the following example.

“Words left unsaid
can grow louder
in your head
long after
the opportunity
is dead”

This short piece is loaded with such profound meaning; I had to stop and think about it because it is so true. Who can say that they have never been in a situation where they think that they should have said something when it is now too late to do so? The poetry speaks directly to different life situations, and it gives the reader an incredible connection with the thoughts and emotions of the author.

I did not dislike anything about this book. It is excellently written and well-edited. I only came across one error on spelling. Although some of the poems were about making love, there are no descriptions of erotic scenes but rather the emotions which are expressed through different symbolisms. I did not encounter any profane words.

I recommend the book to readers who enjoy poetry about life and love. The book takes the reader through varying emotions but closes on a note of hope and encouragement. This book deserves 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed it immensely and would pick another book by this author any day.
