Review by Dabrielle -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are Voulhire – The Fires of Virko, the second book in the We are Voulhire series takes the reader deeper into the world of magic and intrigue as the characters from volume one take centre stage in a series of cataclysmic events. Matthew Tysz skillfully develops a drama of epic proportions in his narration of the conflict that exists between the natural Cosmos and the mystical Caromentis that rivals it for supremacy. The tension is rife throughout the narrative exposing disturbing levels of evil that undermine the very fabric of society in Virko and threaten to extend to the very lengths of the Kingdom of Voulhire. The villainous display of the enigmatic Folcro, the successor to the envied positon of Lord of Virko is rivaled only by the emergence of the formidable and ominous Lord Dalehei Meldorath. His sinister plot promises to wreak even greater havoc on the Kingdom than Folcro’s devices. And silently, yet intently working in the sidelines is the simple Galen Grae, an unlikely hero. Along with his two well-meaning friends, Galen has been unwittingly thrust into the fray and seems to hold the fate of Virko and possibly even all of Voulhire in his hands.
The reader is taken up in an ever-increasing crescendo as the plot intensifies, culminating in bedlam and chaos in the industrial city of Virko. The main characters are well developed and theirs is a story of rejection, ambition and rebellion. As they fight the demons surrounding them, they must also battle the demons within. Matthew Tysz is masterful in his choice of characters who are at times humorous and at others deadly treacherous. The variety of personalities serve to maintain reader-interest from beginning to end.
The language of the novel is simple but effective in catapulting the reader into this alien world of intrigue and suspense. The book seems to be professionally edited with no major errors or typos. There are some profanity and sexual imagery that make the book appropriate for the mature reader.
I grade this book a 4 out of 4 as the author was very masterful in thrusting his reader into a world of magic, warfare and death. What I enjoyed most about this book is that the tension remains throughout and is almost palpable and at the end leaves the reader desperate to lay his hands on the third book in the series.
We are Voulhire – the Fires of Virko is an intriguing book in which Tysz creatively treats a theme that is foreign to our context of life, but manages to fully engulf the reader in this alternate universe. This plot leaves the reader longing for more and anxious about what happens next. I can’t wait to start the next We are Voulhire book.
