Review by Wayne wayne -- Love My Colors
Hair is thick, black and curly, shaped like a trapezoid; she looks lost in her thoughts, thinking of the day when darkness was a curse, a shame to look upon. Despite the fact that her parents are white, Natashia was born with a dark complexion, and nobody understood the reason. Cece her mum, loved her daughter unconditionally. Unfortunately, Brad her dad left for England and married another woman. Cece, with support from her family, begins her journey as a single parent to a child who is different from the rest in the society.
Back in the home village, white skin complexion is considered a beauty, while children with dark skin are considered as outcasts. Despite the hardships that await Cece and her daughter, she has to move back to village due to financial constraints. Natashia doesn't have a dad to protect her from the harsh society that constantly bullies her because of her skin color. But she has her mother, her aunties, her cousins and her grandparents to count on. Cleanne Lynn Johnson narrates Natashia's struggles in life in this amazing book Love My Colors.
What I like most about the book, is how the author used a few characters, Natashia being the center of interest, to highlight most of the issues in the society; hence the story is simple and interesting. Natashia has to face bullies, not only because of her skin color, but also she's smart and always top of her class. Her mother, being a single parent, has to work extra hard to afford a house for them. So Natashia is raised by a single mom, she has to face racism, bullying and poverty. Sad but that's the harsh reality in the society.
This book is an inspiration to readers who maybe experiencing the same difficulties, and an eye-opener to bullies, and men who abandon families on what their victims feel and have to deal with. The author helps the reader create a rapport with the characters. It's easy for one to put themselves in the characters' shoes. Natashia struggles with bullying at school, since her mother taught her to be polite and respectful. Can you stand up to bullies without causing fights? Well, find out if Natashia can in this amazing book.
The book teaches us how to maintain our esteem, no matter how different we are, and no matter how difficult our situations are. The growth in character is amazing. Natashia is a motivation to children, teens and older women, as the book reflects on her journey since birth to adulthood. Cece is an inspiration to all mothers. Even though Brad abandoned her during her pregnancy, she doesn't get on the way of brad and Natashia's relationship. She gives Natashia the opportunity to judge and determine the type of relationship she will have with her father when he shows up. Her family is supportive, and provides a safe and comfortable environment for Natashia. Will Cece forgive Brad abandoning them in poverty? Will Natashia forgive her dad? If you were in Cece's or Natashia's shoes, what would you do if Brad finally reached out?
Even though Cece and Natashia have family members they can count on, they believe in God as their pillar, and their help in every situation. Therefore, I'm happy to rate this book 4 out 4 stars. The book is flawless, and there are no errors. The story is an inspiration and an eye-opener to all. I'd recommend this book to teens, mothers, those having troubles with their self-esteem, and anyone else experiencing various difficulties in life.
