Review by Marty_Kelly -- Manasakd by Kelly May Andrews
I believe that there would be nothing more unsettling than finding yourself in a world where everyone, apart from yourself, knew everything about you. A world where virtually everyone wanted to be your guide and mentor, only not for who you are but for their gain. This selfish world was the world that Tali found herself.
Set mainly in the fictional and mystical land of Manasakd, Manasakd by Kelly May Andrews is a young adult fantasy novel. Tali’s first time in Manasakd was very confusing for her. She learns about the various classes of the inhabitants of Manasakd (Empaths, Storms, Mythics, Visionaries, Dreamers, Intellects, and Healers) and their roles, and also that she has a special role to play. One problem is this: all the characters she comes across wanted to be her mentor (including some animals who are not mentors). Who would be her mentor? And how can chaos not ensue from Tali’s advent?
The story is told entirely from the first-person point of view. The book is divided into chapters; each chapter began with a title and the name of the character from whose perspective that chapter’s events are narrated. The story unfolds at a steady pace. Andrews' writing is very descriptive, and the vivid pictures she verbally paints makes the story very interesting and captivating. Initially, I wished there were illustrations in the book; however, as I delved deeper into the story it became more visible to my mind-eye.
I enjoyed the author’s writing style. The characters are well-developed and real enough. These characters portray, vividly, elements of everyday life, and in subtle ways, the story also depicts how to handle emotions. The characters, the plot, and the skillful narration of the story combined with the author’s beautiful descriptions all made this book an interesting one. I am quite happy that this is only the first in a series. There is nothing I did not like about the book. I would very much like to read more about Manasakd and its inhabitants.
I give Manasakd a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because I enjoyed reading it and strongly recommend it. Furthermore, I did not find any errors while reading the book. This reflects good, professional editing. The book contains very minor profanity. This book is suitable for those who enjoy reading fantasy stories. It also features fantastic elements such as magical creatures as well as speaking stones and animals. Being a young adult book, I also recommend it to young adults.
