Review by BeccaMc -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
My favorite genre of movies, books, and TV shows are psychological thrillers and true crime, so I was very excited to read The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare. Since my favorite author is Stephen King, I tend to have high expectations for crime, horror, or psychological thriller novels.
The Dark Web Murders easily met my expectations and I cannot wait to read more of Brian O’Hare’s books!
Detective Sheehan and his colleagues investigate a series of brutal murders that seem to have an odd connection. This case is unlike any other that the detectives have encountered. They find themselves faced with a secret elite club that is involved with the most heinous of taboo subjects. There is a widely unknown area of the internet where only dark or dangerous people visit – including the killer who blogs about the murders. This novel contains secrets so dark that some information is kept in a safe that is nearly impossible to break open. As if those weren’t enough challenges, the psychological profile of their killer is a psychopath who can blend in perfectly and appear completely normal to society. This riveting book contains chapters choked full of deceit, manipulation, cover-ups, blackmail, and death. Revenge and justice are the driving forces behind the heinous crimes contained within The Dark Web Murders.
I like that the author wrote a summary, in the beginning, of all the characters mentioned in his book (as there are quite a lot). Also, he provided an index of terms and abbreviations since his book is written using a plethora of Northern Ireland police terms. The chapters written in “blog” form may be more difficult to follow for some readers who aren’t used to reading nineteenth-century classics. I liked that the author included the chapters where we got a glimpse inside the killer’s mind. I like that the author allowed the killer to attempt to excuse or justify his actions, just like a killer would in real life.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There is nothing I dislike about the novel. It is immaculately written. There were only a handful of errors, so I know it has been professionally edited. Due to the graphic content and some use of profanity in the book, I would not recommend this to young audiences. I believe anyone who enjoys crime, suspense, or thriller type novels will enjoy this book. I will definitely keep an eye out for more of Brian O’Hare’s books. His writing is captivating and I did not want to put this book down.
