Perfection and Other Illusive Things by J. Mercer is a captivating story of what it’s like to be in high school, searching for your own identity. Eden wakes up perfect. Her hair is thicker, her lips are fuller, and she has the body shape she’s always desired. Was it magic? That Wednesday morning that she woke up perfect gave her more confidence than she’s ever had before. In that moment and with her newfound confidence, she vows to herself that she is going to ask out the boy that she has been crushing on for ages, Hawk. The boy that no one else thinks highly of. Her life then becomes a serious of choices. Does she try something new or stick with what is safe and has worked? Perfection and Other Illusive Things is a coming of age story about love, friendship, and figuring out how to exists between the two.

What I liked most about this book, is that it captured me and brought me back to the times I fell in love. It brought back the butterflies in your stomach and the times that you can’t help but smile when you think of that special person. The book details perfectly the thoughts and emotions that one experiences when falling in love. The book is exciting and keeps you wanting more!

What I disliked most about this book was the ending. I really enjoyed this book, but it was a shorter read and I was hoping for more to happen. The ending left me hanging. Maybe there will be a sequel. In general, it was just a short and quick read and I think that it could have been made longer.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The reason I gave this book 4 stars, is because despite what I disliked about the book, it was still a great read. It was fun, exciting, and tugged at the heartstrings just perfectly. There are a few minor editing mistakes, but besides that the book seemed professionally edited.

I would recommend this read to young adults. The story takes place in a high school and is about the internal struggle that adolescents have between love, friendship, and finding out who they truly are. It is a coming of age story that I think most young adults could relate to. In this book there are slight references to magic. If you do not believe in magic, I would not consider this the book for you.
