[Following is a volunteer review of "Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1)" by Janet McNulty.]
Solaris Seethes by Janet McNully is the first book in the Solaris Saga series. This book will most likely appeal to young adults who enjoy science fiction as it is set in space.
The book was very well edited and I did not notice any spelling or grammar errors. However, there were quite a few wordy sentences that I found hard to follow. These sentences contained sub-clauses using parentheses, dashes, or commas. As a result, they were grammatically correct but I found the frequency of them distracting and confusing. The book contained no cursing.
The book begins with Rynah witnessing the destruction of her home planet, Lanyr, which was planned by her fiancée, Klanor. Rynah manages to escape the planet on a ship left to her by her grandfather upon his death. The ship is run by a female artificial intelligence named Solaris. Solaris promised Rynah’s grandfather that she would help Rynah fulfill a prophecy if Lanyr was destroyed. Once Solaris convinces Rynah to attempt to fulfill the prophecy, Solaris brings 4 people from Earth aboard for assistance. This begins the group’s quest to prevent further destruction.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I found the concept creative and really enjoyed the diversity of the characters from Earth. I loved how they interacted with each other, learning about their differences and appreciating those differences. They were also willing to learn different skills from each other and improve themselves; I saw good character growth in them. I appreciated the fact the group encountered adversity and that their obstacles weren’t always easy to overcome or solved by a quick, too good to be real solution.
I struggled to connect with or even like the main character, Rynah. I understand she has quite a bit to feel angry and resentful about; however, she agreed to work with the people from Earth with the goal of fulfilling the prophecy and then spent a lot of time criticizing some of them. I especially disliked how she treated Brie, the shy, non-confrontational teenager from Earth. Rynah was also impulsive and inconsiderate. There were also some small logic questions I had concerning plot points. None of these questions detracted from or had a large negative impact on the story and were more a result of my overly analytical nature. I also disliked the ending of the book. I understand why the book concluded where it did but it felt like a cliff hanger, which are a pet peeve of mine in books.
