Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a paranormal fiction that dares the reader to feel sorry for the antagonist. The story is divided into two parts and begins with Benjamin Poe, a former firefighter captain. Benjamin is serving a sentence on death row for the murder of his son Gabriel. He recounts the story to his lawyer and explains how he had never intended to shoot his son, but does not deny holding the gun that shot him or firing the bullets. The reader is then taken back to the time in Benjamin’s life before everything fell apart.

Four years prior to the incident, Benjamin Poe was a beloved firefighter in his hometown of Lochton, Illinois. His marriage, with the added strain of a troubled and problematic 21-year-old son, was struggling. After a fire at the College Inn, the place where his son works, he is relieved to find his son safe but cannot shake the feeling that his son is withholding something from him. Despite this, the incident brings him and his wife together to work through their issues and resolve to protect their son. It is around this time that a mysterious stranger appears in town asking to speak to Benjamin. The stranger in question has a powerful aura of dark energy and things only get worse from his sudden arrival.

In the second part of the story, we find out more about the mysterious stranger. The stranger in question is a demon called Crighton who is sent around by his master, Lucifer, to retrieve wicked and sometimes innocent souls. On a mission from his master, he is captured by a secret organization called the Sovereign Sector and the reader is left to wonder what secrets they hope to find. After he is captured, he has to formulate a plan of escape with the same angel that he was sent to capture on his mission. This only leads to further secrets being unveiled and more drama.

I give Soul Seeker 4 out of 4 stars. The novel is well-edited with twists and turns at every turn of the page. There was no moment that I was not at the edge of my seat. Additionally, I found that it had the perfect blend of star-crossed romance, action and supernatural fiction. I also thought that it was interesting how the stories of each character tied together at the end. It was evident in the dialogue and internal thoughts that a lot of attention was paid to the psyche of each character. This gave the novel added depth, which I appreciated.

What I liked best about this book was that there seemed to be no clear bad or good characters. Even the only human character who was arguably an honourable man ends up shooting his son. I found myself empathetic to even the most evil of all characters, which I thought was interesting, to say the least. I also enjoyed how the romance was not conventional, as I found that it fit perfectly into the story and the type of characters that they were. There was no aspect of this book that I did not like as I found that it was enlightening and left me on my toes the entire time.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a supernatural or paranormal romance. There are elements of action and the novel rapidly picks up pace towards the end. I would not recommend this to anyone offended by strong language, slightly sexual scenes or stories fictionalising angels and demons. The one thing that I will take from this novel is that everyone has a story of how they ended up the way they are.
