Review by Ntokazi Kunene -- Breakers by Barry Litherland
This is the most thrilling mystery I've ever read. Breakers is a crime, mystery, horror and fiction genre book, based in a very small town where everyone knows one another. When ghosts and wanted evil criminals start evading the small town, it is quickly noticed and acted upon.
Billy McArdle is a well known character who gets a bit aggressive after having a few beers, bit mischievous too. One day he goes fishing with his friend and a skeletal creature snatches the friend, never to be found again. It all seems surreal to poor Billy until the events start unfolding, bringing an understanding to the horror he witnessed. These life threatening events see Billy changing to a better version of himself after losing two of his best friends, him and his sister adopting a young boy.
This is the first of many mysterious occasions that cannot be explained by human nature. It is a perfect blend of two lifetimes - the life here on earth and the afterlife, which makes the book a suspense filled page turner. Detective Jack Munro is trying to solve a mystery which Billy is involved in, including drugs, illegal immigrants and a burnt boat. He immediately links the events to a notorious criminal called Murdo Carr, who he thought died a long time ago. Jack escaped to a small town to live a non eventful life to protect his family and avoid real criminals like Murdo, but alas you can never run from your destiny.
Barry Litherland has a perfect setting with good characters when he wrote this book. It is a perfect crime thriller. I like this book very much because it is detailed in such a way that the gripping events are mysterious, wanting the reader to keep reading until the last page. I also like the fact that it teaches one that crime doesn't pay, not in the least. There is Clive's family in the storyline where his wife is patient with their son who has an imaginary friend, parents here can learn a few tactics on how to tackle the same situations in their day to day lives. There's nothing to dislike about this book, everything was written in an exceptionally flawless manner.
I will rate this book four out of four because it captures ones' senses. The feeling was akin to watching a movie in a theatre, be at the edge of your sit till the very end. Barry Litherland took his time, well thought of and researched knowledge in writing this particular book. You are instantly absorbed into the events from the on set.
This book is a perfect read for adults as well as grown up teenagers. Breakers aptly shows a person how life can be at times and when you least expect it. Nevertheless it contains some vulgar words, so it is not very suitable for adolescents. In conclusion, the book was professionally edited by the author which makes it more exciting to read.
