[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
I have finished reading We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. I have to say this introductory book to the world of Voulhire was great. That action scene at the beginning of the book was explosive and engaging. It sets the right amount of eagerness for a reader to get absorbed into the story. I did not even notice that I was already reading halfway into the book shortly after reading the first few pages. The plot gradually became interesting as the author introduced the characters that will be playing inside the world of Voulhire. The imagery of the setting was beautifully written as well. Descriptions made for Magnum Caelum, Hillport, Soulhire, and the others did a very good service to a reader’s imagination.
The part I liked most in the story was that brief encounter in Hillport that portrayed innocence and goodwill. That part about a boy unreservedly giving flowers to a girl in the middle of the street and doing so naturally was a precious scene for me. It stood out from among the events in the story and branded a moment of rare innocence. It was true what the character said that such a scene was not a commonly witnessed moment in the world, especially in the midst of all the danger and malice that lurked around the corners. That scene was just so genuine that I couldn’t help but appreciate it. I appreciate declarations of affection described as simple as this one when other types would be shrouded in indirect motives and hidden agenda.
As I read, I only enjoyed the reality this fiction book portrayed. One of these realities is the existence of Riva Rohavi. It was a sad yet true description of what inevitably happens at the start of unifying a nation. In the struggle for order, some people get hurt and some people disagree. If not dealt with properly, these problems tend to snowball and vengeance takes its course.
I did not find any part that I disliked about the book. For me, it was well written and exceptionally well edited. I did not find any grammatical errors. For all these reasons, I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I think this book deserves it. I am recommending it to young adults who enjoy reading about a world where magic and physics collide.
This book introduces the origin and people in the land of Voulhire. It stages the arrival of Galen Bray to present the land’s attributes, history, people, and politics. Galen Bray left the dreadful Land of the Princes and went to start a new life in Magnum Caelum – a humble town in Voulhire. Things have already been happening in the background as Galen started to settle in. He is soon to discover that the land he thought was beautiful and better than his previous home did not escape the dark influence of malice, envy, and struggles for power that is starting to tarnish the land.
