Official Review: Spring & Summers Veil
[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Spring & Summers Veil" by JoyAnne O'Donnell.]
Motifs from nature are ideal to be the subjects of poems, especially spring and summer motifs. This is because at this time of year, nature is extremely enchanting and lively. Spring & Summers Veil by JoyAnne O'Donnell is just such a collection of poems in which the author very vividly depicts certain summer and spring scenes from nature.
This relatively short collection consists of 24 poems. Each bears the symbolic name of a particular motif or segment of nature. Through each individual poem, the author depicts a certain event, ambience, moment, scene, or sound from nature. Likewise, in the poems the author expresses her own experience of nature and landscape at a given moment. Most poems are somewhat abstract, symbolic, and metaphorical. It is this abstraction that gives readers the opportunity to experience the poems in their own subjective way.
What I like most about these poems is that they can easily transport readers to another place. It is very easy to immerse yourself in this world. At the same time, reading these poems awakens all the senses. I especially like the ingenious and imaginative way the author describes everyday scenes. In this way, she turns ordinary scenes and seemingly insignificant moments into mysterious and unusual ones.
What I do not like about this collection of poems is that it is too short. Likewise, some poems are also too short in my opinion. Some are only 5 or 6 verses long and take up an entire page. Although I enjoyed most of the poems, I did not see the point in some of them. They seemed too abstract and incomprehensible. However, this is my personal subjective opinion, and it is therefore possible that other readers will like these poems.
All things considered, I decided to give this book 3 out of 4 stars. The poems are very picturesque and vivid. Through this collection of poems, it can be noticed that there can be a million kinds of interpretations of different natural phenomena. Therefore, the poem is always ultimately created in the eyes of the reader. Although there are some poems that I do not like, I do not think it's the author's fault. I would recommend this book primarily to all poetry lovers. I also think this book would be a good choice for other book lovers who are not big poetry readers but might want to start reading poetry. The collection is very short and can be read quickly. I did not encounter any grammatical errors.
