"Flight from Saddam" by Qasim Albrisem is an autobiography where the author portrays his personal approach to the political events that occurred in Iraq during Saddam Hussein's rule. Mr. Albrisem experienced the horror and torture of the Saddam regime on his very person.

Qasim Albrisem was a political prisoner who survived despite all odds the tremendous torture, and hardships during his long-term imprisonment at different prison camps during Saddam’s regime. He portrays inhuman, evil ways in the art of torture including actions taken by the corrupt government to frighten the revolutionaries from engaging into further insurrection. He eventually escaped, and got his ultimately freedom in England where he got to write and share his story.

"I would be liberated from Saddam and I would write a book exposing Alradwania Prison, I promised myself. As far as I knew I was the only writer who had managed to survive. I had a story to tell the world, and I prayed that I would be given the change to narrate it."

The story teaches you that which is not possible to learn from simply reading the official reports in the papers or in history books. He shares what he saw, experienced, his thoughts, even his philosophy about life and death, all this from his very memory.

I decided to review this book because I wanted to learn more about Saddam as I knew so very little from before. I was not aware of how many got inflicted by his terror, and I knew even less how serious his crimes where. And even if you had read about his affairs in the past by reading newspapers or watching TV, without this book your would still still not have grasped how much more there were to it, and how severely it actually was for the political prisoners at that time and place in history.

The book is interesting the way that it gives a totally unique, personal perspective to the insane cruelty of the Saddam regime. Since the book is very graphic, I don't recommend it for those who are sensitive to torture and violence in general. This book will guarantee you shivers on your back especially since it's a true story. Despite the book is not my type of reading, I still find it an interesting read. I recommend this book for people who wish to learn more about the terror of the Saddam regime, how it affected the people living there as well as the political prisoners.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
