Review by KaylinBrown -- Inside Incest by Madeline A.Garner
Inside Incest: Psychotherapy and Energy Healing Transform This Therapist and a Guide for Survivors is a non-fiction novel detailing the author Madeline Garner’s struggle to accept and overcome her childhood traumas. Garner starts by giving the background of her own incest experiences and other childhood abuses, followed by her descriptions of how she was able to come to terms with all of these traumas in her adulthood. The second part of this novel provides information on what incest is, possible therapy methods available for the survivor, and lists of resources and help groups for those in need. Garner also emphasizes that this book is not a tool for confronting abusers or reporting anything, it is an example of how she personally dealt with her traumas to finally feel better. The methods she used may not work for every survivor, but providing another story for those in similar situations helps to normalize the fact that abuse happens, unfortunately, and inspire other survivors to try to heal themselves.
I am rating this book a 4 out of 4. I thought it was an excellent book all around and is very useful for its purpose. It was well-written, had almost no typos, was easy to understand, and had its point come across very clearly. It deserves more than a 3, and I would recommend it to anyone that might find themself in similar situations to the author.
This book is an adult novel, and it is meant for survivors of incest. There were also discussions by the author of other abuses she suffered in her youth, such as neglect from her mother and sister. Survivors of childhood traumas other than incest, such as neglect, could also find this book useful for their healings. The topic of this book is a serious one, and it is not a light read or a book to read for fun. This book should be taken seriously, and therefore should only be read by mature audiences that can handle hearing about all of the bad things the author went through.
There was not any particular element to this book that I disliked. The organization of topics was fitting for the flow of the story, and the grammatical and syntax aspects were all fine. Since it is a non-fiction novel there were no issues with the plot or characters to be concerned with.
The element that I liked the most was the progression of the story from her childhood and introducing the traumas to her adult life dealing with the effects of the traumas, and lastly concluding the book with the resources for other survivors. I thought it was very important that Garner included those since everyone deals with their issues and heals in different ways.
