Maggie Flannery was raised on a small farm in Ballymoon. Her family, being in desperate need of money, made her set out to Carlow to work as an assistant baker in a bakery shop. It is in the course of her work that she met John Hummes, a traveler, whose mission is to make friends and fan the flames of resistance among patriots in Carlow. John and Maggie became friends, and he acquaints her with his friends, Philip and Annie. The friends embark on a journey to raise patriots who will stand against the oppression of the British without necessarily shedding blood.

However, it became obvious that nothing can be achieved without shedding blood. Maggie received her share of these ill-treatments when her father was murdered by the English soldiers and when she was raped by a dozen men. Broken and filled with hatred and resentment towards the English, Maggie vows to kill a dozen English men as revenge for the crime against her. Does Maggie, along with her friends and thousands of Irish patriots, stand a chance against the British? Will Maggie get her revenge? Will she find this freedom she desperately seeks and let go of hate? All these and more are revealed further in this book.

I Will Avenge by P Howard Smith tells the story of four friends, Maggie Flannery, John Hummes, Philip Cunningham, and Annie Doran, and their various sacrifices in the course of seeking freedom from the hands of their oppressors, the British. This book also deals with violence, revenge, forgiveness, suffering, and God's intervention in the lives of several characters.

I had the feeling that this book would be action-filled from the title, and I wasn't disappointed. The book was a smooth read, covering in detail the experiences of these protagonists. I particularly loved the character of Maggie. Maggie was bold, fearless, and resolved, especially when she sets her mind on something. These attributes made her a leader, and she gained the respect of men. A display of these qualities was when General Joseph, in the mountains, called for a meeting involving his lieutenants and John, neglecting Maggie. Maggie came uninvited, daring them to evict her if they wished to try and insisting that as women were involved in the war, they also deserved to have a voice. This caused them to invite her immediately.

There was nothing I disliked about this book, as it was an entertaining and suspense-filled book. It was professionally edited, as I found only a few errors, which are not enough to deduct a star. Hence, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

This book, I Will Avenge, spans the period from 1789 to 1804 and gave details on how some Australians have their origin traced to the Irish. Lovers of historical fiction and action-filled books will enjoy this book, and I recommend it to them.

I like the story line, it's has this captivating theme, but I will suggest that the front cover of the book should be changes, the girl looks innocent while the storyline is talking about vengeance.
