Official Review: Iris and the Blue Speckled Egg
If you are seeking a short story to make you smile, look no further. Written and illustrated by Jennifer E. Walker, Iris and the Blue Speckled Egg is eggxactly the book you want.
Just as the cover illustration shows, this is a story about a loving mommy duck named Iris and her giant egg. A blue speckled egg is not what Iris expected; nonetheless, she gives it her love and attention. Her egg is taking long to hatch, and Iris is fretful. Until her dear friend, Petunia, comes up with an idea! Except, this plan requires lots of effort from both. Will it work? What will hatch from this giant egg? I will egg you on to discover the ending of this tale!
The plot and illustrations in Iris and the Blue Speckled Egg are simple and refreshing. Walker manages to build the storyline with enough conflict and action to keep the readers interested. This book will not need a long attention span, making it easy for children to re-read.
The illustrations are nearly the same throughout the story. This title lacks the full-page multicolored images usually seen in picture books. Surprisingly, I was not put off by that! The blue and yellow pastel tones subtly reminded me of nursery colors. Moreover, Walker did a splendid job showing her characters in constant action, like sitting, running, and climbing. The drawings depict the characters' emotions nicely. My favorite scene is Petunia raising her wings in the air in protest.
Regrettably, I rate Iris and the Blue Speckled Egg 3 out of 4 stars, despite the positive aspects. I did not give a 4-star rating because this book could use another round of editing. It did not seem professionally edited. Sadly, the formatting and punctuation issues were a distraction. I found one misspelled word. There was one blank page, but it did look unintentional. Some commas were missing, while quotation marks were in the wrong place. I did not want to give a 2-star rating because these issues are easily resolvable. Furthermore, I truly enjoyed the delightful illustrations.
Overall, I recommend this book for sleepy parents looking for a short bedtime story. I also recommend it to kindergarteners starting to read. Toddlers will be mesmerized by the giant egg and the yellow ducks. On the other hand, fast-paced readers might get bored with this book.

The errors are unfortunate though, maybe it’s best that young readers avoid this one since it would be bad if they picked up the errors. Anyhow, thanks for your awesome review!
