[Following is a volunteer review of "Love, Grandma" by Ann Morris.]
Love, Grandma by Ann Morris, is an absolutely adorable children’s book. The author based it on fond memories she shared with her granddaughters. Payton and Haley do fun things with their grandma, like read books, have sleepovers, do hair, and draw with chalk outside. It’s a sweet book that I’m sure many grandmas and grandchildren could relate to and emphasizes how loved Payton and Haley are.
One of the things I liked most about this book was the colorful illustrations by David Gnass. The different activities Grandma, Payton, and Haley partake in all have a fun picture to go with. My favorite images were of Payton dressed up in Grandma’s shoes and clothes and a picture of Grandma getting her hair styled by the girls. I think the pictures would be especially appealing to younger children who can’t read yet. They could look at the pictures and tell the story themselves. Illustrations are an essential part of a children’s book!
I also loved the way the book was written. It rhymes, which sounds great when read out loud. Some of the rhymes were a bit of a stretch, but overall I loved the creativity. I have two toddlers, and I can easily imagine how well this book would sound if I read it to them.
This book is targeted at a younger audience. I would read this book to any child up to around age 5. A young baby would like the colorful illustrations and the sound of the rhymes. A 3 to 5-year-old would be able to appreciate the story more. As far as reading on their own goes, I think a 6 or 7-year-old could read it alone. Also, even though the book is about granddaughters, I think it’s suitable for both boys and girls who have a great relationship with their grandma.
I would rate Love, Grandma a perfect 4 out of 4 stars. I wouldn’t rate it any lower because there was nothing I disliked about it. It was well-written and exceptionally well-edited. It was colorful, and the activities Grandma did with her granddaughters were realistic. I know my children do lots of the things included with my parents!
I highly recommend Love, Grandma to anyone who has young children who love their grandma. I’m tempted to give a copy of this book to my own mom, so she can use it to help tell my kids how much she loves them!
