Review by Jbcitygirl -- Cat Detectives in the Korean Pen...
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi is book number 8 in the delightful Inca series.
Inca fancies herself the queen of kitties and a top Siberian Detective Cat to boot. As she travels the world, she keeps a diary filled to the brim with adventure and intrigue. This time around they jet off to South Korea where Mom will present her special cheese and serve as one of the judges for a French patisserie competition. Upon reaching their destination, they quickly befriend Baram, a white Korean Jindo dog that belongs to their host for the duration of their stay. The turmoil between North Korea and South Korea had split up their family, and the team quickly hatches a plan to try and reunite them.
As always I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure through the eyes of Inca, and I appreciated the amount of detail that went into the story about the country and its rich history, as well as the current state of affairs. The scattered illustrations throughout the book were lovely and provided a beautiful backdrop for the diary entries.
Kristi’s knowledge of North and South Korea was well-rounded. It seemed like she either had first-hand experience or properly researched all the details. I especially liked the fact that she decided to place the visit during cherry blossom season. It gave the story an extra feeling of warmth in my opinion.
The storyline is sophisticated, but the language is simplified so her target audience can read it with ease. I would recommend this book to children between the ages of 2 and 12 years. Younger children might need a little help from their parents, as the book is not a quick read, but rather can be spread out over many nights as a bedtime story.
This is a children’s book and there is nothing offensive to be noted. As always the author has packed the book full of positive messages like learning about and respecting other cultures, having a healthy appetite, helping out friends (old and new), and being good guests.
There were very few errors and not a single thing a disliked about his book. I am pleased to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
