Review by dcruzsammy -- Rulers of the Galaxy
In the aftermath of the Imperials' attack on the Elemental planet, Salarin wakes up in a destructed city, having no memories aside from her name. There she found a baby who she feels an unconscious need to protect. Even more so after an attempt by Imperial soldiers was made to end its life. After her brief escape, she committed herself to protect the baby and return him to his parents. As she embarks on her quest to return the baby and find her identity, she meets a young man named Bosco from the Raider clans who will help her on her journey and with who she will build an unexpected friendship.
Rulers of the Galaxy by Tayla Tameeem is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that will take us to a world of intergalactic fight for power and dominion. I found the lead character very interesting because despite having no memories of who she is, Salarin has shown how strong she is as her instincts kicked in. It made me anticipate her true identity even more. She also has a soft side which we get to see most with her interactions with the baby. Another thing I liked is the friendship she and Bosco have. And how the latter helped Salarin, although not without a motive at first.
The story was written from different points of view, and at some point, it became a bit confusing for me because it turns out that those parts were written at different timelines. As I got the hang of it, I found it quite interesting to see how the events laid out and how the plot twists were slowly unraveled.
One thing I didn't like in the story is how the High-Minister's parts were introduced towards the middle of the story. It involved him leading an intergalactic battle between Imperials and many other groups. Since he wasn't given focus in the earlier parts of the story, I didn't feel any connection to the character, and his parts felt like they came out of nowhere. I was uninterested during his parts and was constantly looking forward to scenes involving Salarin instead.
Overall, I would rate this story 3 out of 4 stars. There are some minor errors throughout the story, but aside from that fact, the scenes involving the High-Minister felt like filler chapters. And although some scenes helped the readers know his intentions and character, it felt like the lengthy battle scenes involving him was unimportant for the story.
This book would appeal to readers who like sci-fi stories filled with action. I would not recommend this book to younger readers due to themes of violence, especially towards the end of the story.
