Review by KodiwoDan -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival un...
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first entry into the We are Voulhire series. We are introduced to a multiverse consisting of Cosmos (the physical universe), Caromentis (the magic universe), and Alitheia (the spirit universe). Most of the storyline occurs in Cosmos with very little known of the magic universe. Galen Bray has known war for most of his life in the Lands of the Princes where the four sons of the Emperor of Lullabies were in constant conflict vying for absolute control of the entire chain of Islands which had been divided among them. Here death was always lurking, either by sword or slow starvation – the choice was yours. Upon receiving word that his uncle wanted him to inherit his forging business in Magnum Caelum, Galen jumps at the opportunity to escape all these and heads for the coastal town in the kingdom of Voulhire. His destination represents a land known for its prosperity, freedom, hope, and rich history, but on a keener look, we are confronted with power-struggles, political tussles, terrorism, gluttony, and its own version of wars and conflicts.
This book introduces us to a fascinating fantasy magical world and multiverse. A world of kings, mages, knights, lords, and ordinary men. We get to delve into the perspectives of various characters in the nation of Voulhire and beyond. The author constantly shifts between first-person and third-person narratives throughout the book.
I appreciate the way Matthew Tysz describes this kingdom and the world we are being introduced to. The book starts with a comprehensive map of Voulhire showing all the significant towns, locations, and features that are to play a substantial role in the storyline. This aided me to visualize the relative locations and movements of the characters especially for the journey of the Riva Rohavi to the south. The towns were equally extensively described including what their inhabitants specialized in and the people’s general traits. I also appreciated the way the author kept on shifting the scenes from chapter to chapter so that we were not stuck on a singular scene for long. This helped to lay the foundation of the whole plot which I’m confident can only be further strengthened in the preceding books.
However, this constant change of scenery made it slightly difficult to follow the general flow of the plot until towards the end when most of the characters’ storylines intersected consequently forming a bigger picture. It is also worth noting this book has a few instances of the use of profane language. None of these were offensive enough to put off an enthusiastic adult reader.
I would give this book a rating of four out of four stars. I enjoyed the way the author was able to effectively get me enthusiastic about this new series. I know the plot is still being developed therefore I may not have the precise picture yet, but I’m already hooked. I would recommend We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies to all those who love a thrilling and capturing fantasy filled with adventure, magic, suspense, and a well-described plot.
