We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an exciting read full of adventure, mystery, and magic. First, an evil Lord Meldorath storms the castle in Hillport and uses magic to lay waste to anyone in his path. Then, we jump slightly forward to a new lord, Lord Eldus, coming to comfort the people of Hillport after the evils they experienced under Lord Meldorath and his predecessor. The people just want assurance that the all-powerful mage is truly dead. We also meet Galen Bray, who was rescued from the warring Land of the Princes to claim his inheritance from an estranged uncle in Voulhire. He looks forward to following in his uncle’s footsteps as a blacksmith, and befriends Rowan, the interesting executor of his uncle’s will. Throughout the book, there is a constant threat from the mysterious Riva Rohavi, who seem to be ruthless pillagers. The people look to the Mianoran knights for protection. It is unclear at this point who is in control of Voulhire. Is it the king, the knights, the Riva Rohavi, the church, or the mages? Matthew Tysz pulls you instantly into the world he created with these questions and more.
This book is a fast-paced adventure and keeps you interested throughout. I enjoyed reading from the perspective of multiple characters in the book. Tysz jumps between characters enough for you to get to know everyone, but not so often that you feel confused or overwhelmed. The characters are well developed, and I look forward to learning more about them in subsequent books. Lord Meldorath is believable as an evil mastermind, you cannot help but love the heart of Lord Eldus’s family as they strive to better Hillport, and Galen Bray is a charmingly innocent character you instinctively root for. The book is a fabulous introduction to the region of Voulhire and ends with so many unanswered questions that will hopefully be explored in the rest of the series.
My only complaint is that the book ended too fast, and I must read the next one as soon as possible!
I give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars. It is everything I love in a book: a great story, believable characters, and a cliffhanger. I look forward to continuing this series to discover the fate of Hillport, who is pulling the strings, and what will become of magic in Voulhire.
While this book does have some foul language, it is not superfluous. I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults who enjoy fantasy and adventure books. This is only the first in the series and I have a feeling we are in for wars, secretive alliances, and magical attacks in the future.
