We are Voulhire is a series of science fiction stories, written by American novelist Matthew Tysz. He created a magical full of the mystery world, where modernism was merged with the alchemical age of the eighteenth century.

The first book, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies , focuses on a vast majority of characters, particularly upon a man named Galen, who lived in Land of the Princes, where chaos and war have ruled for a very long time by four sons of Emperor of Lullabies. The protagonist was not willing to accept that his only fate was death either “from starvation” or “ by the sword”. He leaves his home with a goal of finding a better life in the place called Magnum Caelum, a tiny city in Voulhire, where his uncle left him a legacy of his forge business. Voulhire itself is full of different provinces, Hillport is one of them. This city experienced severe challenges throughout past years, which left a major impact on society. A new Lord Eldus was sent to help the city to bring out its true potential. The story keeps switching from one place to another, showing how magical at first sight Voulhire starts to reveal its true colors.

The story kept me intrigued and fascinated by how much it could relate to some aspects of my personal life. Specifically, the storyline of Galen Bray, a naive young man from a poor city came to a new place with a different pace of life and values. Being thankful for every little thing he was helped with, which shows how pure his soul and intentions are. It can be seen in every chapter, which narrated by Galen, where all his thoughts and ideas are well-written and clearly described by the author. Especially a moment, where he was in the boat on his way to his new life without any food and sleep, Galen still found the strength to not complain and stay grateful, as he said: “I saw the discomfort as the price for my arrival”.

Unfortunately, I was getting lost with characters a couple of times throughout the book. Especially in the beginning when characters were merely introduced, it is quite hard to recall who they are or which part they play in the story. Also, the plot is developed slowly, which can be very unfortunate for some readers. However, it was most probably the author’s idea to get the feeling of starting the next book of the series. The last downside that I have found is some scenes of the character’s death, but it might relate to my reasons and the types of books I prefer.

To conclude, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies , deserves 4 out of 4 stars for its vast range of diverse well-thought characters and intriguing world of Voulhire. The book was professionally edited, as I did not find any grammatical errors. This series would be a good recommendation for sci-fi lovers and those, who could appreciate the complexity of the magical world.
